What can third level offer you?

Studying at third level will broaden your horizons, develop your confidence and open up new worlds of both personal and career opportunities which may not have been available to you before. Third level education can offer you the necessary educational qualifications required to enter specific professions or careers, such as engineering, accounting, or nursing, to name but a few.

Alternatively, a more broad-based qualification such as a humanities degree can give you the opportunity to develop a wide range of useful skills which are required by employers nowadays such as critical thinking, problem solving, team work and communication skills, as well as giving you the pleasure of studying subjects you are really interested in.

What courses are available?

There is a wide variety of courses available in third level institutions around the country. At undergraduate level, courses include certificate, diploma or degree courses. Information on all higher education courses in Ireland is available from various websites on our useful links page.

In addition, some third level institutions offer foundation or access programmes which act as a preparation for entering third level, helping you to develop some of the practical skills which you will require and giving you a taster of different subjects. The Shannon Consortium’s Certificate in General Studies is one such programme.

What Supports are available?

There are many supports available to help you with your decision to return to higher education. Most higher education institutions in Ireland have a Mature Student Officer (if you are aged over 23) and Admissions Officers who are happy to answer queries from prospective students.

The Downtown Centre Guidance Service is also available to anyone aged over 18 who is seeking information or guidance on making applications or course choice. Advice on financial assistance is available from third level institutions directly or from other websites such as those listed on our useful links page.

There are also a huge number of supports available in most third level institutions once you become an undergraduate student such as academic supports, careers advice, health services, counselling services, disability services and so on.
